In 2006 I completed my PhD (funded by the
NERC e-science program) in the Environmental Systems Science Centre
(
ESSC), which also hosts the
Reading e-Science Centre. The aim of my project was to explore the predictability of extratropical cyclones using
the feature identification and tracking program
TRACK. My work involved investigating the impact that different observing systems have on the predictability of storms and comparing the ECMWF and NCEP ensemble prediction systems. The e-Science part of my project involved the
development of a TRACK Internet Service which enables users to run the TRACK program from their web browser
with remotely distributed data sets. The Internet service was used to compute storm tracks from the EPS
data and helped with the large data handling requirements involved in the processing of the EPS data.
