The Marine Informatics group at ESSC has played a leading role in ocean data assimilation developments, contributing new algorithms and methods that are widely used operationally, both in the UK and worldwide.

We have two long-term research aspirations for data assimilation:

  • to see data assimilation as a useful tool in understanding and improving model processes and;

  • to see ocean reanalysis products becoming useful in understanding and quantifying climatic timescale changes to the Earth System.
