Partnerships

ESSC's involvement with companies interested in our science is growing. Under the appropriate conditions there can be a mutually beneficial flow of ideas and expertise in both directions and we are seeking to develop these in several ways. These are managed collaborative programmes in areas of Research and Development that bring together researchers and businesses through an intermediate partnership organisation.

British Maritime Technology are a leading multidisciplinary engineering and technology consultancy company with offices around the world. They are particularly well-known for their expertise in offshore oil and gas technologies, ship design and the environment. BMT have, since 2001, very generously funded a chair at ESSC - the BMT Professorship of Marine Informatics - held by Professor Keith Haines. We are working with them on projects relating to coastal marine dynamics.

The Environment Agency has the statutory responsibility to monitor the environment and enforce the relevant legislation within the UK. The EA is an officially associated organisation of the University. We have worked closely with them on a number of projects in the past. In particular we have a shared interest in developing new techniques for monitoring and modelling of flooding in river valleys.

SIRA

Our work with remotely sensed data often gives us a good insight into the deficiencies of existing sensors. Working with companies like SIRA gives us the opportunity to help design, develop and deploy new sensors to the benefit of environmental science. SIRA are a major British company involved in the design and manufacture of high technology optical instruments and sensors. The Compact High Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (CHRIS) instrument launched on the PROBA platform was a SIRA instrument which ESSC helped to develop.
