Marine Science

The Marine Science group is primarily involved in ocean data assimilation development and ocean reanalysis for climate. Assimilation of data from ships and autonomous profilers such as Argo, as well as from satellites, into the best ocean models, allows the recovery of ocean circulation changes. It is also the key to ocean and seasonal forecasting systems using coupled ocean-atmosphere models. New algorithms for the use of satellite altimeter data and temperature and salinity profile data have been developed using new physically based Observation Operators. Prof Haines is Climate theme leader for the National Centre for Earth Observation, NCEO, and also leads ESSC‘s contribution to the National Centre for Ocean Forecasting, NCOF.
